History of Elderly Care on St. Maarten

The first plans for a home for the aged originated from Father L.V. Dijk in 1943. On May 30, 1946 the home for the aged 'Sweet Repose' was officially opened. Mrs. H.Conner had the honor of cutting the ribbon.

The first director of "Sweet Repose" was Mrs. Albertine Cockley. Together with a cook they cared for 4 aged ladies. During a visit by the Lt. Governor of the island at that time, he praised the home for its neatness and the practical arrangement of the home. He requested to admit men as well and after a few months, an aged man took up residence at "Sweet Repose". In the course of the years much changed. In 1956 a male caretaker of the aged was employed to supervise the men's section. He also made small repairs and did other jobs until he eventually was admitted to the home due to his age.

In April 1963 again plans were made to expand the "Sweet Repose" decided was to construct a totally new building beside the St. Rose Hospital in the Front Street. Two years later, on April 1,1965 the new home for the aged "St. Martin's" Home was aged was officially opened.

Presently St. Martin's Home is a combination Home for Elderly and Nursing Home clients housed in the new building in St. John's Estate.

As for all clients of the foundation before admittance there is an introduction procedure, welcoming clients to their new home. For the staff it is very important that persons admitted are happy in their new environment that is why introduction is seen as a very important part of the admission.
In general elderly clients are persons who are independent and often still active. An assessment is made of the new clients daily activities, needs and whishes. The staff will try to accommodate these needs and whishes.
The home has 2 bedroom apartments and the clients can bring along small furniture, a TV pictures and paintings they would like to have in their room.
The activities coordinator and the physical therapist will include the client in the daily programs as much as possible to suit the clients. Transportation is available as well as out door activities for them.
