Disability goes beyond any national boundary, religion, race or gender. In the Caribbean, a permanent movement towards equality, quality of service delivery, dissemination of information, organizational development, distribution of human resources and research. The White Yellow Cross and its departments firmly support this movement. The Sister Basilia Center specifically supports this movement with the following mission statement: “ to improve the total (physical, cognitive and social) development of people with disabilities; to enhance their quality of life, with special attention to effective health care, rehabilitation, early identification, detection measures and dissemination of information about disabilities”. This mission statement is supported by enhancing every individual with a disability to take his / her rightful place in society. Every individual has the right to be treated with dignity and equality and be given the opportunity to develop self-respect. The central starting point for the Sister Basilia Center is to create equal chances for people with a handicap in all areas of life: they have a right to quality care, good living circumstances, education, employment etc. All activities are developed with this starting point in mind. Quality care has increased in 2005 through the implementation of new developments; the direct client care has been optimised. The Sister Basilia Center will continue this course in 2006, aimed at the development and stabilization of the professional care supply.
