| St. Martins Home is a 60-bed nursing home and home for the elderly that offers quality nursing care to all its clients. The home is divided in 2 units: unit 1 is for nursing home clients and unit 2 is for elderly care clients. Nursing home care is needed when a client has a physical illness or handicap, mental illness or both. Elderly care can be needed when a person is not able to live alone anymore and needs some extra help with their daily activities. The St. Martins Home works with the principle of Client Centered Care. This means that the needs and wishes of the clients are always our starting point when giving care. With the help of an individual care plan the nurses and client work towards the determined nursing goals. The year 2003 was the first year in our new building in St. Johns Estate. The facilities of the new building offer each client so much more than in our old location and the clients really enjoy it. Of course we think back to our old seaside location but in return we got so much more! We also noticed this during the year with the amount of new admissions. No longer do people see us as "the old peoples home", but as a modern and professional location where you can receive the best of care. The client amount rapidly rose to our maximum capacity and briefly we even started a waiting list for new admissions. We also received our first rehabilitation client, a young gentleman who had suffered a stroke and needed therapy to regain his functions. After two months of intensive nursing care, physical therapy and speech therapy he was able to return home and live an independent life again. What a great feeling of satisfaction this gave all the staff and therapists! Education was also very important in 2003. In June two of our nurses graduated as registered nurses after two years of intensive studying and training. Also eleven of our geriatric nurses started the accelerated Licensed Practical Nurse course, which is given on St. Maarten in cooperation with the SMMC and the IFE CuraĆao. This course lasted 16 months and 6 nurses graduated in March 2004. This training and upgrading will directly benefit the clients of the St. Martins Home by increasing the quality of the care that they receive. Looking back, the year 2003 gave us new opportunities, challenges and continued goals to achieve in the year to come. Bregje Boetekees-van't Hof Department Manager St. Martin's Home.
