Policy Development

Policy development
The organization of the White and Yellow cross foundation is a semi flat organization structure. This structure facilitates involvement of all parties in the decision making process. The choice of this structure is made because the foundation believes that involvement of staff in developmental process of the organization is motivational and motivated staff will improve the quality care provided to the clients. Policy development advises and is advised by the board, director, department management, care financers and legislative bodies of developments, about problems and future planning of the care product.

Some of the development projects:
  • According to the 5-year Policy plan of the foundation for 2002 amongst others the "district nursing care product specification" is to be prepared and implemented,
  • as is the "Play therapy project" financed by Reda Social to be completed and its future determined.
  • Much time and effort has been spent in regards to the new St. Martin's Home in St. John's Estate in 2003. Together with the supervisor to the building process for the White and Yellow Cross the many aspects of the building concerning client care is discussed over and over between staff, clients and builders, contractors and subcontractors.

The maintenance department
Maintenance supports all departments with their preventative maintenance schedule and emergency maintenance. Since at the moment the majority of the buildings are very old emergency maintenance is a daily task. Leaking faucets, toilets not flushing, tiles loosening from the floor, roof leaking every were in St. Martin's Home causing electrical short circuits. This causes a tremendous backlog in preventative maintenance to the beds, wheelchairs, walkers and other client's needs. At the moment a preventive maintenance schedule is being compiled for the new buildings hoping to be able to improve their services to the clients in the near future.

BSL laundry does the heavy laundry and the client's daily clothes. The clients are given the opportunity to wash and iron their own clothes. The majority of the Sunday clothes are done by the Domestic staff, who also share out the clean clothes and linens that are returned for BSL. They also repair clothing that the clients cannot do themselves. Cleaning of the clients, room's bathrooms, bathrooms, living and dining rooms, walkways', windows etc. is all the task of this team. This team is also shared with the other departments during sick leave or vacation of the regular staff of the District Nursing and Sister Basilia Center since they each only has one person daily.

A gardener maintains the landscaping surrounding St. Martin's Home and the Sister Basilia Center. Greenfingers on occasion advised him how to keep up the young plants, fertilizing, pesticides etc. Our energetic gardener is doing a great job in keeping up with the considerable landscaping in St. John's.
